Live Blackjack uses a real dealer, physical cards, and a live video stream to deliver table gameplay online. Unlike RNG-based games, where software generates each outcome instantly, live Blackjack follows a defined sequence that mirrors how the game is played at a land-based venue.
If you’re looking to play Blackjack online in a live dealer format, understanding how each round is structured will help you follow the pace of play from the moment you sit down.
Placing your bet
Each round begins with a betting window. A countdown timer, visible on screen, shows how long you have to place your credits on the table. Once that window closes, no further bets can be accepted or adjusted.
This is a key difference from standard online Blackjack. In a live game, you’re working within a shared timeframe alongside other players at the same table. The dealer waits for the betting phase to complete before the round moves forward.
The deal
Once betting closes, the dealer distributes the cards. You receive two cards, both face up. The dealer also receives two cards, but one remains face down throughout your decision phase. That hidden card is known as the hole card.
Behind the scenes, optical character recognition (OCR) software reads each physical card as it’s dealt and transmits the values to your screen in real time. Your hand total is calculated automatically, so you don’t need to add it up yourself.
Your decision
With your two cards visible, you choose how to proceed. The standard options are:
Hit to receive another card. Stand to keep your current hand. Double to double your credits on the table and receive one final card. Split if you’ve been dealt a matching pair, dividing them into two separate hands.
Each option is available via on-screen controls. You’ll have a set number of seconds to confirm your choice. If the timer runs out before you decide, most tables will register your action as a stand. The dealer moves to the next player once each decision is made.
The dealer’s turn
Once all players have completed their decisions, the dealer reveals the hole card. From that point, the dealer follows fixed rules with no discretion involved. They must hit on any hand totalling 16 or below, and stand on any hand totalling 17 or above. Some table variations require the dealer to hit on a soft 17, which will be outlined in the game rules before you play.
These fixed rules are part of what makes live Blackjack a regulated format. The dealer has no influence over the outcome beyond following the rules set by the operator and the licensing authority.
How the round ends
The round concludes once the dealer’s hand is complete. If your total is closer to 21 than the dealer’s without exceeding it, the round resolves in your favour. If both hands are equal, the round is declared a push and your credits are returned. If either hand goes over 21, that hand is bust and loses.
Each round in live Blackjack is entirely independent. The cards dealt in one hand have no bearing on the next. The outcome is determined solely by the order in which the physical cards fall in that round, making it a game of chance throughout.
