Despite dominating the second half, during which Edan Diop equalised and les Rouge et Blanc enjoyed a numerical advantage for much of the period, AS Monaco were unable to complete the comeback against Lille (1-1).

Their efforts ultimately went unrewarded. Despite dominating proceedings, AS Monaco were held to a 1-1 draw in this top-of-the-table clash against Lille on Matchday 8 of Ligue 1 McDonald’s, extending their unbeaten run at the Stade Louis-II. The result came in the presence of President Dmitry Rybolovlev.

THE CONTEXT

After suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Lorient last weekend, les Rouge et Blanc quickly returned to winning ways in the UEFA Conference League with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg. They were now looking to build on that success against Lille at the Stade Louis-II and make a significant move in the standings. To do so, however, they would need to produce a complete performance, with Les Dogues sitting joint-top of the league alongside AS Monaco.

The Line-up

For this top-of-the-table encounter, head coach Filipe Luís made three changes to the side that defeated Freiburg, bringing back Flávio Nazinho, Denis Zakaria and Ansu Fati, who scored the third goal in the Conference League victory. Jordan Teze, meanwhile, retained his place at centre-back alongside Sadibou Sané for a second consecutive start, while Paris Brunner returned from suspension to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Match

With a strong crowd at the Stade Louis-II thanks to the “Tous au Stade” initiative, and 2000 French champion Willy Sagnol in attendance, the match got off to a cautious start as both sides sized each other up. Unfortunately, Lille took the lead with their first real foray into the Monaco penalty area. After winning possession high up the pitch, Soriba Diaoune picked out Ethan Mbappé, who opened the scoring (0-1, 24′).

Two Changes at the Break

Les Rouge et Blanc attempted to respond but struggled to break down a well-organised Lille defence. They even came close to conceding a second before half-time, but Nathan Ngoy’s effort was comfortably gathered by Lukáš Hrádecký (45′). Looking to turn the game around, Filipe Luís made a double substitution at the start of the second half, following a half-time interval that featured the first edition of the ÜNSEME Challenge. Edan Diop and Matthis Abline both came on (46′). The latter made an immediate impact, winning a free-kick from 25 metres out. Aleksandr Golovin stepped up and forced Berke Özer to turn the ball behind for a corner (47′).

A Man Advantage for the Final Half-Hour

The Monegasques looked much sharper after the restart and established themselves in Lille’s half, but still struggled to find the breakthrough. Their number 37 sent a cross-shot narrowly wide (60′), before Paris Brunner fired over with a first-time effort from inside the six-yard box (65′). Moments later, the German striker helped his side gain a numerical advantage for the final half-hour when Tanguy Kouassi was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on him (66′).

Edan Diop Scores Again at the Louis-II

With an extra man, the hosts increased the pressure, although Lamine Camara’s powerful strike from distance flew just over the crossbar (70′). Their persistence was finally rewarded moments later when Edan Diop’s inswinging cross caught the Lille goalkeeper off guard, with the German forward putting him under pressure, and found the net (1-1, 74′). It was Diop’s second goal of the season, following his strike against Toulouse. The Monegasques continued to push forward. Aleksandr Golovin’s first-time effort was gathered at the second attempt by Berke Özer (78′), while Jordan Teze’s long-range strike flew narrowly wide (84′).

A Frustrating Draw After a Dominant Second Half

As the final whistle approached, les Rouge et Blanc kept pressing in search of a winner. Unfortunately, Matthis Abline’s header (93′) and Vanderson’s effort with his head (95′) were both kept out by the Lille goalkeeper. It was a frustrating outcome for AS Monaco, who had to settle for a 1-1 draw despite completely dominating the second half, registering 17 shots to Lille’s one. Nevertheless, they extended their unbeaten home run and provisionally climbed to second place in the standings. Next up is an away trip to Paris FC on Sunday (5:15 p.m.).
