AS Monaco footballer played for the Russian national team prior to the 2022 World Cup

The attacking midfielder of FC Monaco was included in the list of players who Valeri Karpin, coach of the Russian national football team, called up for the two important games of the qualifying tournament for the 2022 FIFA World Cup (21 November-18 December in Qatar), namely for the games against Cyprus and Croatia. How did he perform and how did these games go?

Against Cyprus, the Russian national team won 6-0, but against Croatia they were less fortunate. In the final minutes, one of the Russian players accidentally scored an own goal, giving the Croatian team the victory. Now Russia will have to play in the qualifying matches.

In his match with Cyprus, Alexandr Golovin came on the pitch as captain of the Russian team and gave an assist for one of the goals scored by Russians into the Cyprus net. The Red-Whites’ number 17, whom Valeri Karpin appointed as the captain during the game with Cyprus, was brilliant overall in the match held at the home arena of FC Zenit in St. Petersburg (6-0 win). For the prior CSKA Moscow player this meeting was his first as the national team captain. For the now Monaco player this was his 13th goal in 44 games played for the national team.

However, Alexandr Golovin, as well as his team-mate Fyodor Smolov will not be able to help the national team in the first qualifying match. Both players received yellow cards and a caution in the second half against Croatia. These matches will be played in March 2022. The draw for it, which will decide Russia’s opponents, takes place on 26th November.
