Prince Albert II commemorates 163rd anniversary of Battle of Camerone in Aubagne

The Sovereign visited Aubagne for a day steeped in tradition alongside the French Foreign Legion on Thursday 30 April 2026 to commemorate a battle that took place on 30 April 1863, in Mexico. This year, the theme chosen by the French Foreign Legion was “the nobility of service”. The Sovereign’s presence at this commemoration reflected the historical ties between the Principality of Monaco and the French Foreign Legion, inherited in particular from Prince Louis II of Monaco’s service in its ranks at the beginning of the 20th century.

Prince Albert II visits L’Étoile French Navy Ship

During a stopover in Monaco, the Sovereign went aboard the training schooner L’Étoile, which was moored at the Yacht Club of Monaco as part of celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the French Navy (1626).

Welcomed by Lieutenant Commander Victor Kaars Sijpesteijn, Prince Albert II was accompanied by French Ambassador to Monaco, Jean d’Haussonville. Built in 1932 at the Fécamp shipyards, L’Étoile is a 34-metre, 275-ton topsail schooner, inspired by the Paimpol schooners that fished for cod off the coast of Iceland. Along with her sister ship, La Belle Poule, L’Étoile is the last French Navy vessel to have served with the Free French Naval Forces during World War II. Based at the Naval Academy in Brest, L’Étoile helps train officer cadets at sea, in a vessel far removed from modern technology.
